Il a été découvert en 1980 en Argentine. Les paléontologues José Fernando Bonaparte et Jaime Eduardo Powell ont retrouvé six squelettes incomplets.

Gebel Kamil est une météorite ferreuse de type non groupée.
Un total d’environ 1600 kg d’éclats de météorite de fer, d’une masse de < 1 à 35 000 g, et un seul individu de 83 kg complètement recouvert de regmaglyptes, ont été trouvés dans le cratère d’impact Kamil en Egypte. Ce cratère de 45 m de diamétre a été découvert par une équipe géophysique italo-égyptienne en février 2009 et février 2010. Environ 800 kg de la masse totale observée sur le terrain (l’individu regmaglypté inclus) ont été récupérés.
